Current Artist INREZ at Studio 206, Laurie Van Wieren presents, Who Made These Video Tapes, an in-depth, 30-year retrospective of her work choreographing, dancing and performing in Minnesota. The retrospective will re-examine Van Wieren’s work, as well as, the related work of her peers, through a series of formal performances, open rehearsals, discussions and informal showings with local dance artists and critics from the 1980's to the present.

Who Made These Video Tapes, opens with solo performances by Laurie Van Wieren and a recreation of a group work-"5 Dancers and a DJ" featuring; Judith Howard, Tom Carlson, April Sellers, Megan Mayer, Susan Scalf and Chris Holman. The weekend of collaged dance performances will take place within a gallery installation of documentation and archives representing and recalling Van Wieren’s witty, sly and thoughtful body of work.

Spring: Laurie Van Wieren’s winter into spring residency at Studio 206 continues an examination into her body of performance works and the work of her peers in a series of open rehearsals, discussions, and informal showings with dance artists and critics from 1980's. At the close of the spring, Van Wieren will wrap up her residency and present a collage of dance created from an in-depth examination of a closet-full of her work as captured on VHS tape, ¾’so tape, beta, and other media of her times. The final performance, similar to the opening, takes place within a gallery installation of documentation and archives representing and recalling Van Wieren’s witty, sly and thoughtful body of work.

“Who Made These Video Tapes?” is also supported by the Southern Theater as part of its McKnight Artists Fellowship Program, funded by the McKnight Foundation.  Laurie Van Wieren is a recipient of a 2008 McKnight Choreography Fellowship, administered by the Southern Theater, Minneapolis.”

Biography

Laurie Van Wieren is an independent choreographer, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. She has been creating dance and performance since 1980. She grew up on the west side of Chicago, and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. There she studied performance art and film history. She moved to Minneapolis in 1975 and started her career in dance, studying with Nancy Hauser, a choreographer and teacher who had been in the company of Hanya Holm. From 1975-1985, Laurie took many workshops with the likes of David Gordan, Dana Reitz, Ruth Zapora, Deborah Hay and Eiko and Koma. She formed her own company in 1985. As a solo performer, and with her company, the B-Specifics, she has performed in many venues, including: the Southern Theater, Dancespace, DTW, Links Hall, the Walker Art Center, Lake of the Isles skating rink and the Fabrik in Potsdam, Germany. Laurie performed in the Art of Movement Festival, in Yaroslavl, Russia Aug 2006. She is the recipient of fellowships from the McKnight, Jerome, Bush and Rockefeller Foundations. Active in the Minneapolis/St Paul arts community for the past 20+ years, Van Wieren has collaborated with many video, theater, and music artists. She produces a monthly dance/discussion called 9x22 Dance/Lab and is the Dance Curater at the Southern Theater.
